Max Verstappen`s recent triumph in a GT3 endurance race at the legendary Nordschleife circuit has not only solidified his already esteemed position among his Formula 1 counterparts but may have also made him an even more formidable driver, according to his rivals.
Red Bull granted Verstappen permission to participate in the four-hour Nürburgring Endurance Series event on the challenging 13-mile Nordschleife, often dubbed `the Green Hell.`

«We had been preparing for this for a while… just two very enjoyable days,» Verstappen shared with journalists in Singapore on Thursday. «Racing in both wet and dry conditions, gaining more and more experience, was great. And naturally, winning it was an added bonus.»
Verstappen`s immediate focus has now shifted to achieving a third consecutive F1 win at the Singapore Grand Prix this weekend. A victory there would further validate McLaren`s consistent assertions that the Dutchman is an extraordinary talent in this year`s drivers` championship.
His seamless transition between racing series is truly impressive. Verstappen competed against a field of drivers intimately familiar with the Nordschleife, widely regarded as one of the world`s most perilous circuits. It famously hosted the German Grand Prix and was the site of Niki Lauda`s notorious fiery crash in 1976.
His GT3 victory inevitably prompted discussions leading up to Sunday`s Singapore Grand Prix: could this experience have made Verstappen – already undeniably the best driver in Formula 1 – even stronger?
«Does it make me a better driver? I`ve been doing this for so many years on the simulator, so doing it now in real life isn`t dramatically different,» Verstappen commented. «But it certainly doesn`t hurt, I think I can confidently say that.»
Williams driver Alex Albon, who was Verstappen`s Red Bull teammate for two and a half years, concurred. «There`s a lot to gain from driving various cars; you could call it expanding your `vocabulary`,» Albon explained. «When you read a book, you increase your vocabulary. When you drive different cars, you enhance what we call our `toolbox.` You discover various methods to drive fast, and you learn different techniques, tackle diverse challenges, and understand varying limitations of the car and how to overcome them.»
McLaren`s Lando Norris stated that this simply underscores Verstappen`s role as the benchmark against which the rest of the F1 grid must measure themselves. «The fact that he can enter any series and likely be the best demonstrates his exceptional skill and greatness,» Norris remarked. «I`ve said it many times. I believe he was born to be, and will forever remain, one of the greatest, if not the greatest, in Formula 1.»
What was particularly striking during media day in Singapore was the palpable excitement among other drivers discussing Verstappen`s extracurricular activity. While other accomplished drivers like Le Mans 24 Hours winners Nico Hülkenberg and Fernando Alonso have participated in diverse events, Verstappen`s choice of the formidable Nordschleife for his first non-F1 race genuinely impressed his competitors.
Another former teammate, Alpine`s Pierre Gasly, was thoroughly impressed and expressed interest in potentially joining Verstappen in such races in the future.
«I think it`s just incredible,» the Frenchman stated. «The Nordschleife is an iconic racetrack. It`s just insane. Nothing truly comes close to it. It`s fantastic that Max has the opportunity to arrange these things. Ultimately, I think it`s great. He`s reached a point where he has his team, his cars.»
«He has an excellent setup to simply go out and engage in this type of racing. I believe it`s beneficial for the sport. Ultimately, I wouldn`t mind joining him in some of this racing in the future,» he added.
Haas rookie Oliver Bearman`s eyes lit up when asked if he had seen highlights of Verstappen`s race weekend. «I`m a huge fan of Max,» Bearman enthused. «That was really cool to witness.»
«I watched some highlights, and I also saw his pole lap where he had to overtake a car on the grass. It was pretty spectacular.»
Bearman had an additional reason for enjoyment, having competed against Verstappen`s teammate Lulham earlier in their careers.
«I raced with him in karting when I was about 7 or 8 years old,» Bearman recalled. «He was always extremely fast and very, very skilled, and then of course, he transitioned to sim racing and became arguably the best sim racer in the world. And now, you know, he`s been competing in GT World Challenge this year, but to be racing with Max at the Nordschleife, that must be an absolutely awesome experience.»
