«I always appreciate the more demanding courses we encounter. Here in Orlando, we typically face windy conditions; it’s rare to have a period without significant wind. They’ve also implemented some changes, including new runoff areas.»
Colin Morikawa celebrated his inaugural signature victory last month at Pebble, while Jacob Bridgeman secured his win two weeks ago at Riviera. Scheffler’s result at Riviera concluded his impressive streak of 18 consecutive top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour. Morikawa finished tied for 7th at the Genesis as he prepares to tackle Bay Hill.
«This is one of the most challenging golf courses we play all year. It’s reassuring to arrive after a couple of strong finishes and assess my game. However, on this course, you can never relax; it will be a relentless effort from tomorrow morning right through Sunday,» Morikawa stated.
Rory McIlroy Targets Second Bay Hill Title
Rory McIlroy, a past champion of the Arnold Palmer Invitational in 2018, carries strong momentum into this event and the upcoming Players Championship. He recently finished runner-up to Bridgeman at Riviera.
«I’m very pleased with the progress I observed at Pebble Beach and Riviera. I believe my strokes gained approach statistics were excellent in both those events. My driving was solid at Riviera; I just struggled with putting for 27 holes,» McIlroy shared. «I’m genuinely happy with the state of my game after the West Coast swing, and I’ve continued to fine-tune it over the past week. I’m eager for these next two weeks and feel I’m in good form.»
Russell Henley Ready to Defend His Crown
Russell Henley, last year’s API winner, returns to the site of his fifth career PGA Tour title, with a chance to become the first golfer to win back-to-back here since Matt Every in 2015.
«I took about three and a half months off in the fall. This will be my fifth tournament this year, and I feel like my game is improving, gaining more clarity,» Henley explained. «I’m excited to be in Florida and compete in this tournament. I anticipate good weather conditions; it will be warmer than the West Coast. I’m keen to play a firm golf course; I simply love the challenge this place offers.»
Justin Thomas’s Journey to Recovery
Justin Thomas arrived in Orlando for his first competitive event since Team USA’s Ryder Cup defeat last year. The 16-time Tour winner had been sidelined for the season’s first seven tournaments while recovering from back surgery on November 13.
«That was the first time this year I could begin chipping and putting. I gradually progressed through that. All top players will aim to build momentum heading into next week’s Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, near Jacksonville. This flagship Tour event offers a staggering $4.5 million to the winner from a $25 million total purse.
There’s a noticeable, almost overt, effort to elevate it to «Major» status, despite professional golf traditionally recognizing only four: The Masters, The Open Championship (British Open), the U.S. Open, and the PGA Championship.

Regardless of one’s opinion, many might agree that The Players is «better than most,» a phrase famously coined by a former API winner during an NBC Sports broadcast a quarter-century ago.

«I’m still a bit confused, and I think many people are too. Personally, I prefer to think we have four major championships. I consider The Players the best regular-season event the PGA Tour offers,» Koch shared during a media day last week for the Valspar Championship (March 19-22 at Innisbrook Resort near Tampa), which concludes the 2026 Florida Swing.
«The Players boasts the strongest field. It’s played on a magnificent golf course, somewhat akin to Augusta in that respect. It’s held at the same venue annually, so spectators are familiar with the holes. This familiarity often generates tremendous drama, especially towards the finish. It truly is the premier event organized by the PGA Tour,» Koch concluded.
